Sorry, this week’s comic is a day late due to some work deadlines!

Luckily, this situation is purely fictional but it can be handy when playing a new game to have somebody at the table who has played it before. But maybe ask them beforehand if they’re ok with teaching the rules. 😉

Last week we had quite an interesting week! We kicked it off with another game of Middara, which was fun but the scenario ran a little long so we cut it in half and will finish the scenario next time (…so: next year! :’D).

On Thursday, we had a game night with a theme – it was extinct/fictional animals game night! We still had to play a game of Unmatched with the T-Rex figure and our friends really wanted to try Unicorn Fever. So that’s a theme, right?! This was our first team game of Unmatched and that was nice! We enjoyed it better than the one-on-one games that we have played so far. We find it interesting how our personal taste in Unmatched seems to be a little off with its marketing. We think the co-op game is best with two players and we think ‘normal’ Unmatched is better with teams!

Ironically, we initially planned a game night in a few weeks to get our fancy Unicorn Fever to the table because people were never really drawn to the game and preferred playing other games. But to our surprise, we played another game of Unicorn Fever this weekend with other friends because they were very curious and wanted to try it as well! We have to say: the big (and heavy!) colorful quirky horses and big cloth mat really add to the atmosphere and it makes the racing part of the game more of a show.
We do think that the estimated play time on the box is a little too positive with 40 minutes. In our experience, it’s often more like 90 minutes. It’s a fun game as long as you don’t take it all too seriously and… sometimes also make silly bets! And since it’s a game mostly about luck, those can pay off. In our last game, we had one player who was way behind the rest and made three successful bets in the last round and managed to score 14 points and ended up in second place in the end. Those are great moments in a game. 🙂

Let’s see.. what else did we play? Ah, yes! We played the third and final scenario of War Story. This game has amazed and impressed us greatly. We didn’t make the best choices in the last scenario but we enjoyed every bit of it. We still greatly recommend this game if you like storytelling/choose-your-own-adventure games. We’re not sure about the replayability, the rulebook and many folks online suggest that the replayability is there though. After playing it once you do know about some plot twists and events, so I guess you could replay the game to discover what story parts you have missed or to better your end score?

And… our Cyber Monday impulse buy was delivered! The Destinies big box that holds all the expansions and… most importantly, that holds all the miniatures and assigns a number to them. Destinies has a lot of small minis (15mm) and finding the right ones is a hassle so this makes setting up a scenario lots easier. We really like that it looks like a chest with drawers, it kinda reminds us of our own cool Eldritch Horror chest!

Another cool thing that was delivered to us was a gift from Deep Print Games. They always sent something fun and creative at the end of the year but this year they went overboard and sent out a big blanket with the pattern of their game Intarsia! It’s so nice and cozy and the colors are really fun. It’ll be well used with winter on our doorstep!

Do you mind teaching a group the rules of a game?

I enjoy explaining games, but having a heads up is nice for sure. If it’s a complicated game, sometimes I have to try to remain aware if everyone is following the rules while playing. That can be quite draining, especially with 4-6 player games.
